TNO MEP - Odor measurement system
TNO MEP in Apeldoorn, The
Netherlands performs smell measurements all over The Netherlands using
their smell measurement system.
Smell
measurements are conducted to observe how much "smell" a company produces. This
cannot be performed by robotic electronic noses. Current measurement practice
uses a panel of "sniffers" that is offered diluted smells. The diliution is
gradually lowered until a "sniffer" can detect the smell conclusively. Based on
the average dillution among the panel can be determined how "strong" the smell
was.
TNO has a small furnished truck specially for the purpose of delivering
diliytions of smell to a panel of "sniffers". The truck consists of a dilition
system, tubing and buttons for each sniffer.
De software, written especially for TNO, makes sure that the correct dilutions
are offerd to the panel and that the results are automatically stored in a
database and trnslated in several reports. Reports for the client and ofr
quality control are produced with the press of a button.
Important aspect of this project was the fact that the software tries to
conserve as much smell and sniffing time as possible. The results generated in
the truck are almost instantly visible in the office at TNO and can be further
ananlysed there.
